How we run the night

Scrub through a wedding night

In our own words, from our write-up of Jessica & David’s wedding on the rooftop of the Oviatt in downtown LA. The photos are from Tasty Sounds weddings.

  1. A rose-petal aisle under a canopy of trees, with the ceremony at the far end.

    Ceremony

They had a guitarist playing pre-ceremony and during the wedding we had Mom play and sing.

  2. Guests mingling at cocktail hour on a Spanish-style patio under string lights.

    Cocktails

During cocktails everyone went to play around with our Photo Booth and our cool new props.

  3. A bride and groom striking a playful pose on a stone patio as guests watch.

    Grand entrance

I love that the couple came into Walter Murphy’s, A Fifth of Beethoven, which I have never used before for a grand entrance… it actually works great.

  4. A bride dancing in a ballroom washed in warm patterned gobo light, guests standing around the floor.

    First dance

Then they directly went into their first dance, Neil Young’s Harvest Moon. As soon as it ended we went into some dancing which I feel is the key to a great wedding.

  5. Wedding guests packed onto the dance floor with their arms in the air.

    Dancing before dinner

In my opinion you need to get the crowd up to dance before dinner. Having everyone join the couple after a 1st dance is a no-brainer. It puts the thought in the head of the guests that this is a “fun” wedding, not a dinner party.

  6. Wedding guests cheering with their hands raised under warm light.

    Toasts

When we do the Grand entrance, 1st Dance, a short dance set and the toasts; we do it all in 30 minutes. It makes all our weddings a solid 10 because it starts things off right!

  7. An outdoor reception at night, the building lit purple and a crowd gathered below.

    If the night runs late

If things happen (weather, dress issues, long photo sessions, crazy family drama) the time frame will be pushed back. Everyone needs to adjust the exact amount of time they are late, then communicate and compromise.

  8. A bride and groom kissing under tall cypress trees at dusk, lit by a single lantern.

    The rest of the night

I believe in most instances every song can be mixed. Unless it’s super famous like a “Sweet Caroline” that everyone knows, mix every 2 minutes, and give everyone more music.

From a couple we played for

On top of being super knowledgeable and charismatic, he took his time to get to know us via zoom and had many meetings thereafter to create a really fun and Dance heavy wedding day for us. He is so engaging and also a great MC.
